Transcription

HERE is interr'd the Remains of the Rev._D Moses Hale, second Pastor of the second Church of Christ in this town, who died May 25_th 1786: In the 38_th year of his age & 12_th of his Ministry.

In the dark caverns of the Silent Tomb, The old, the young, the gay, all ages come. Here lies interr'd the Priest in sable Urn; Here meets his flock & each to dust return. These iron gates no more shall e'r be burst, Till heav'ns commad Shall wake the sleeping dust And then Creation vast, immense shall rise, And Men with Angles throng th' etherial skies, The God of Nature thus from heav'n hath spoke, Nor Men nor Angel can his work revoke. It must be so! then let my soul resign, And be prepared for his will divine.

Border
A thin two-line border runs along the circumference of this stone. It also encases the three illustrated panels, the 3D portrait of Rev. Hale, and the tympanum. The tablet section has a two-line indented border.
Remark
The bas relief of Rev. Moses is remarkable in its details and composition. The layering of his hair and robes combine with his unbreakable gaze to impress the viewer. The more unstructured abstract designs on either side of the frame draw the viewers attention to the portrait and its depth. There are urns on either side. The Illustrated panels contain a plant with stems and leaves that wind down the sides and across the bottom panel. Joining in the middle, the design has been compromised by time.
