Stone Type
slate
Tympanum
face with ornamentation, memento mori
Border
There is a two line thin border that extends beyond the tympanum and the shoulders and proceeds down the sides. Two side panels are visible. There could be a bottom panel but it is hidden by the depth the stone has sunk which has also obscured the poem. The artwork within the two side panels begins at the top where each side panel has a six armed star in a circle. Below that there are several shapes that resemble shower curtain hooks in alternating orientations.
Remark
Underneath the outer tympanum border, a banner proclaiming Memento Mori covers 2/3rds of the tympanum's dome. The face and wings fill the remainder of the space. The face is evolutionary as it is a generation removed from the round shape. The chin prominently leads that movement but it is also apparent in the cheeks. The mouth, which is usually so prominent, has become miniature. The eyes have pupils and the eyebrows are independent. The nose is proportional but the hair is still portrayed in a primitive manner. The body and wings are interesting in that the smaller feathers along the body almost look like scales on a fish.
