slate
Tympanum
face with ornamentation
Border
A two line, thin width, single border runs along the circumference of this stone. There are illustrated panels around three sides of the tablet section.
Remark
The tympanum has two key design elements. Instead of a niche displaying a torso and head, it has been replaced by a coffin-shaped niche with the face exposed. It is unusual and interesting that the coffin's shape descends into the tablet space. The face is wider than normal but displays very late period realistic facial features (cheeks, nose, mouth, hair). The other key element is the hourglass represented time that has past. The illustrated panels hold images of two thistle like plants that originate in the middle of the bottom panel. They grow out and up from there ending with flower at the stone's shoulders. There is another flower about a third of the way up from the bottom.
