Stone Type
slate
Tympanum
skull
Border
Unlike other examples, this stone was effectively placed in the granite frame with minimal loss of material. The lost lower right corner obviously happened prior to mounting. On three sides of the tablet illustrated panels provide an additional border layer. The centering points of these borders are found at the two shoulders and midway across the bottom.
Remark
The skull is sized to fill the tympanic space with the wings filling up the rest. The skull is a late-middle version as the presentation is so clean. The round eye sockets are transitioning to elliptical, the nasal cavity is extremely succinct and the teeth are uniformly presented. The wings are very artful with the single quill and multiple segments. The mention of the son's burial at the end is common although I've also seen incredible monuments for months old infants.
