In Memory of M_r.
WILLIAM FIFE
who departed this life May y_e
5_th 1790 in y_e 74_th
Year of his Age.
Friends and physicians could not save,
My mortal body from the Grave.
Nor can the Grave Confine me here,
When Christ Shall call me to appear.
- Surveyed On
- April 30, 2016
- Stone Type
- slate
- Tympanum
- face with ornamentation, memento mori
- Border
- This stone has a two similar width border lines around the circumference. The outside line is bevel cut. The inside border also splits into another line to provide a gabled border to the top of the tablet. The Memento Mori sits on top of the center of this line.
The tablet is bas-relief so another two line border provides negative space for that spatiality.
- Remark
- There are three key design elements in the tympanum.
The overhead arch is serrated along its upper edge.
The winged head shows increased realism in the head shape and facial features (nose, eyes, chin, cheeks) along with the hair combed straight back. The wings are the tab-type with some segmentation to add focus and strength.
Finally a plant grows from the stone's shoulders to support the central image.
- Physical Status
- straight less_than_20_degrees
- Intelligibility
- readable
- Biological Contaminants
- minor incursion
