Beneath this monument rests all that was moral of Col. JOHN READ who died July 21st 1798 in the 36th Year of his age.

Th'almighty from his throne on earth surveys Nought greater than an honest humble heart. But this nor piety unfeign'd, avails Death at the tribute of affection mocks, Chills the warm heart remand the Spirit home

The border on the top of the tympanum morphs to and from a vine-like plant that runs along the bottom of the tympanum, and on top of the tablet section. The tablet section utilizes the traditional classic gabled frame of a tablet. There is a stone pillar on each side holding the frame containing the tablet.
Remark
The winged face shows the increased realism of later periods in the nose and face shape. They eyes are still underdeveloped. The wings are the tab type.
